Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, daughter of the Earl of Strathmore, was crowned queen on 12 May 1937, alongside her husband, who became King George VI.
On 12 May 1937, Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, daughter of the Earl of Strathmore, was crowned queen alongside her husband King George VI. Elizabeth, who is the mother of the late queen Elizabeth and became popularly known as the Queen Mother, was brought up at Glamis Castle in Forfar.
World War Two broke out two years after her coronation and Hitler called the queen 'the most dangerous woman in Europe' because of her popularity with the British public. Elizabeth reigned as queen until the death of her husband in 1952.
