John Knox, Scottish Reformation leader, returned to Scotland on 2 May 1559 after a period of exile in Geneva. ...
Knox and his supporters headed to Dundee, where they had heard they would receive support from Protestant sympathisers.
However, Knox was declared an outlaw by the Queen Regent Mary of Guise, so he and his supporters instead went to Perth, where Knox's fiery sermon provoked a riot, forcing Mary of Guise to retreat to Dunbar and clearing the way for Knox to make a triumphant return to Edinburgh.
