King George VI opened the Empire Exhibition in Glasgow on 5 May 1938. ...
The Empire Exhibition was opened at Glasgow's Bellahouston Park by King George VI on 5 May 1938. Despite a wet summer, more than thirteen million visitors flocked to the exhibition, which celebrated the splendour of the British Empire.
Pavilions such as the Palace of Engineering and Palace of Industry showcased Empire innovations, whilst the different Empire countries had their own pavilions.
The exhibition ran from May to December and many Glaswegians purchased season tickets, returning to the attractions time and time again.
