William Soutar, the author of The Diaries of a Dying Man, was born on 28 April 1898.
Soutar studied medicine and literature at Edinburgh University and his first volume of poetry Gleanings of an Undergraduate was published a year after his graduation.
Soutar suffered from the condition ankylosing spondylitis and was bed bound from the age of thirty, filling his time with writing and meeting with fellow poets and writers.
He died at the age of 45 of tuberculosis.
