The Highland Archaeology Festival runs from 30 September to 15 October 2017 and celebrates the heritage of the Highlands from the earliest settlers through to modern times.

This annual festival of archaeology is run by the Highland Council and offers a programme of events including walks, talks, archaeological digs, exhibitions and workshops. The festival launches on 29 September with a talk by Cecily Spall on the medieval period at Eilean Donan Castle and Porthmahomack.

There are three festival trails to explore in 2017:

  • object trail - find the object and get your passport stamped at 16 participating museums
  • geocache trail - new this year and available to explore after the festival ends
  • self-guided trails -  allowing you to explore heritage in the Highlands year round

Other event highlights include the Tarradale Through Time Dig Open Day (30 September), guided tours at Castle Roy (1 October), Bronze Age pottery workshops at Kilmartin Museum (5 October), a prehistoric rock art workshop (7 October) and a Viking family fun day (12 October).

See the full events programme on the Highland Archaeology Festival 2017 website.
