The Scottish Genealogy Society has announced a programme of family history classes, for both beginner and experienced researchers, at its premises in Edinburgh.

The Scottish Genealogy Society, which was founded in 1953, is a voluntary association which helps researchers with Scottish family and local history, offering advice to both new and experienced researchers.

The 2016 programme starts with a beginners class on 9 January, run by experienced family historian Ken Nisbet, who will show students how to get started on tracing their family history.

23 January is a class on kirk session records, which offer useful information not usually found in birth, marriage and death records.

On 13 February, Joy Dodd will give a talk on tax records and what they contain, followed by a class on 19 March, in association with National Records of Scotland, looking at old Scottish handwriting.

Inheritance records are the subject of the 16 April class, followed by a beginners session on 7 May and a talk on pre 1841 population lists on 4 June.

All classes take place from 10am to 12 noon at: Scottish Genealogy Society, 15 Victoria Terrace, Edinburgh EH1 2JL; tel: 0131 220 3677; website.
