What is a clan?

Scotland is world famous for its clan system, which has its origins in a network of families who were loyal to a clan chief, often meeting at gatherings - which became the precursor of today's Highland Gatherings and Highland Games. Millions of people around the world share the surname of one of Scotland's clans, with names such as Mackenzie, Stewart, Campbell and Gordon being shared by people in countries including the USA, Canada and Australia.
