Author, poet and politician Naomi Mitchison was born on 1 November, 1897. ...

During her lifetime, Mitchison wrote more than ninety books, including historical novels and science fiction.

Mitchison was the only girl at her school - Dragon School in Oxford, then became a VAD nurse during World War One. Mitchison was a campaigner for women's issues and a lifelong Socialist, and wrote more than ninety books, including The Conquered (1923), The Corn King and the Spring Queen (1931), and We Have Been Warned (1935). Naomi was the mother of six children: (Geoffrey 1918-27), Denis (1919-2018), Murdoch (1922-2011), Lois (1926-), Avrion (1928)-), Valentine (1928-), Clemency (1940 - died shortly after birth).

She died in 1999 at the age of 101 at her home - Carradale House in Kintyre. She was survived by five of her six children.
