King James VI of Scotland was born on 19 June 1566 at Edinburgh Castle. James was the son of Mary Queen of Scots and her husband Henry Stuart, Lord Darnley, who was murdered less than a year after the birth of his son. James inherited the throne at the age of thirteen months, after his mother was forced to abdicate in his favour. His reign totalled 57 years and 246 days - longer than any of his predecessors.
