Philosopher David Hume, the man credited with introducing social history, was born on 7 May 1711. Hume was born in an Edinburgh tenement and attended Edinburgh University at the age of twelve.

Hume is regarded as one of the world’s greatest ever philosophers and authored works including A Treatise on Human Nature and An Enquiry Concerning Human Understanding. His mammoth History of England took fifteen years to write and ran to one million words. It was published in six volumes between 1754 and 1762.
