The Battle of Dunbar took place on 27 April 1296, with the army of King Edward I defeating the forces of King John Balliol. ...

The forces of King John Balliol were defeated by the army of King Edward I of England (pictured) at the Battle of Dunbar on 27 April 1296.

The battle occurred following Edward's invasion of Scotland after Balliol renounced his allegiance to the English crown. Despite holding the superior position on the battlefield, the Scottish army, believing that the English were about to flee the field, advanced downhill, only to be routed in a single charge.

Around 100 Scottish knights and lords were taken prisoner and Balliol fled to Perth, surrendering to Edward in July.
