On 2 April 1593, The College of New Aberdeen, which later became Marischal College, was founded by George Keith of Inverugie, Earl Marischal of Scotland. The college was built on the site of a former priory and became Aberdeen's second university, with the first founded in 1495 and the two united in 1860.

The photo shows the new Marischal College building under construction in 1900.
