Voices of the First World War is a new project which aims to research the history behind one of the names on the Crathie Memorial at Balmoral.
The project is the work of Fiona MacDonald, director and founder of Glenart, who has recently gained the support of HRH The Prince of Wales.The Prince will choose one of the names on the Crathie Memorial, and project workers will research and present the history behind that particular name, using artefacts which might be lent by local residents, and engaging the local community through performances and workshops linked to the history revealed.
Fiona told History Scotland how Voices of the First World War began: 'The whole project was inspired by my great aunt Mary Mckinnon, who died when the Glenart Castle hospital ship was sunk in the Bristol Channel in 1918. She was a nurse, and wanted to care for injured soldiers, and we, as a group of artists wanted to continue her work.
'We have been inspired also by Sir Nicholas Winton, now 104, who was totally unstoppable in rescuing 670 children from Prague in the months leading up to the Second World War.
'The centenary provides food for thought for everyone. No-one thought in July 1914 that events in Sarajevo would lead so inexorably to war – and it is quite possible that events in the near or distant future might develop a similar dynamic, with similarly unintended consequences.
'If we don’t even remember our mistakes, how can we learn from them?'
