Film maker and producer John Grierson, the man credited with introducing the word 'documentary' into film making, died on 19 February 1972. After working on minesweepers during World War I, he was educated at Glasgow University, graduating in English and moral philosophy in 1924.
Grierson was the founder of the documentary film movement and founded Britain's first body dedicated to documentaries - the Empire Marketing Board.
His first film, released in 1929, was Drifter which told the story of North Sea fisherman, using a gritty reality which was at odds of the usual Hollywood glamour of the day. Among his best known works are Song of Ceylon and the Oscar-winning Seawards the Great Ships.
