Mary Slessor, missionary and campaigner for women's rights, was born on 2 December 1848 in Aberdeen.
Mary Slessor, missionary and campaigner for women's rights, was born on 2 December 1848 in Aberdeen. At the age of eleven, Mary took a job in a Dundee jute mill after her family moved to the city. As an adult, she applied to the United Presbyterian Church's Foreign Mission Board for an overseas posting and was sent to Nigeria.

During her stay in the country, Mary endeared herself to the local population by adopting young children who would otherwise have been ritually slaughtered. She helped to spread Christianity in Nigeria and to promote the rights of women, becoming affectionately known as 'Ma' by the tribes with whom she lived.
