On this day in history - Admiral Thomas Cochrane died

Admiral Thomas Cochrane, a Royal Navy sea captain who served in the Napoleonic Wars, died on 31 October 1860.

Cochrane was a sea captain who served in the British Navy during the Napoleonic Wars and was nicknamed 'Sea Wolf' by the French. After being dismissed from the Navy in 1814 after a fraud conviction, he served in the rebel navies of Chile, Greece and Brazil until he was readmitted into the British Navy in 1832.

Cochrane's later career involved service as a MP, where he campaigned for political reform and spoke out against corruption in the Navy. He was convicted in the Stock Exchange Fraud of 1814 which resulted in him losing his seat in parliament, although he was later re-elected.
