Actor David Niven was born - On this day in Scottish history

Actor David Niven, famous for his role as Phileas Fogg in Around the World in Eighty Days, was born on 1 March 1910.

Niven claimed on several occasions that he was born in Kirriemuir, but according to his birth certificate, was born in London. He had Scottish ancestry through this paternal grandfather David Graham Niven who was from St Martin's in Perthshire.

After a spell in the Highland Light Infantry, David Niven embarked upon a film career, appearing in roles including Phileas Fogg in Around the World in Eighty Days and the Phantom in Pink Panther.

His autobiography The Moon's a Balloon, published in 1971, sold over five million copies.
