Author and diarist James Boswell died on 19 May 1795, at the age of 54.

Boswell, who was the 9th Laird of Auchinleck, was a lawyer by profession but is best known for his literary works. He was the friend of Dr Samuel Johnson, with whom he travelled around the west coast of Scotland, recording their adventures in his diary.

Boswell wrote the biography Life of Samuel Johnson, which was published in 1791. The book contained reflections on Johnson's personality and personal life, subjects which biographies of this age tended to avoid; however the book is now regarded as one of the finest biographies ever written.
