The town of Arbroath is to host a series of events to mark the seventieth anniversary of the Red Lichtie, a Spitfire purchased by the people of Arbroath during World War Two.

Councillors in Arbroath have announced that Harry Simpson has been chosen to head a series of events to celebrate the seventieth anniversary of the Red Lichtie, a Spitfire which was bought as a result of fundraising by the people of Arbroath during World War Two. Harry Simpson led last year's 'Year of the Light' celebrations in Arbroath and said of the upcoming Red Lichtie anniversary: 'We have got a committee together and we have been busy planning a lot of ideas and throwing them into the pot to see what we can do.

'We have a lot of people who are very interested in coming along to get involved and we are working very closely with Angus Council and the local community planning team and town historians.''

'The project is going ahead, of that we can be certain, but unfortunately it is still all very hush-hush at the moment, so there is not much we can confirm.'

The Red Lichtie, which was built after funds of more than £5,000 was raised, was one of a series of planes purchased by the people of the district, and was piloted by Squadron Leader James 'Johnnie' Johnson.
