Explore the country's rich past online with our top five ideas for exploring Scotland's past through virtual history - and all are free!
1. National Museums Scotland
Experience the treasures of four National Museums Scotland from your own home via the Google Arts and Culture programme, which offers you the chance to see more than 20,000 historic objects at National Museum of Scotland, National Museum of Flight, National War Museum and the National Museum of Rural Life here. 2. Future Learn
Future Learn from the University of Strathclyde offers a variety of history courses on topics that currently include mining history & heritage, Scottish family history research and Hadrian’s Wall: Life on the Roman frontier. See the full list here.
3. Sail Scotland
Virtual reality videos from Sail Scotland explore our coastal heritage, with eight virtual journeys that include McCaig’s Tower, Dunstaffnage castle, Fingal’s cave and St Kilda. Visit Sail Scotland.
4. Sketchfab
Sketchfab acts as a virtual museum, allowing you to enjoy seeing 3D models of historic buildings, artefacts, marine vessels, carved stones and many more. The models have been created through collaborations between heritage professionals and 3D experts, making this an engaging experience.
5. Family history
If you’d like to explore your Scottish ancestry there are several webinar resources offering free of charge experiences, including Legacy and Family Search.
