Scottish botanist, garden designer and author John Loudon was born on 8 April 1782.

Scottish author, garden designer and botanist John Loudon was born on 8 April 1782 in Cambuslang. Loudon was a farmer's son who developed an early interest in landscapes through work on the farmland around him.

He was the author of The Encyclopaedia of Gardening (published 1822) and was the founder of Gardener's Magazine, the first ever publication devoted solely to gardening. His gardens include:

  • Scone Palace
  • Castle Kennedy
  • Harewood House
  • Derby Arboretum
  • Birmingham Botanical Gardens
