Novelist and politician Naomi Mitchison died - On this day in Scottish history

Author and political campaigner Naomi Mitchison died on 11 January 1999 at the age of 101. Mitchison was a prolific writer who published more than ninety different works, in a variety of genres. Her work includes the 1947 novel The Bull Calves set during the Jacobite rising. She continued to write well into her eighties and died in Carradale.

Mitchison's most controversial work was the book We Have Been Warned which dealt with issues including rape and violence, and failed to find a publisher. It was re-written following several rejections and finally published in 1935. The book was inspired by Mitchison's trip to the Soviet Union and her strong Socialist views.
