Eric Linklater, author and World War Two garrison commander died on 7 November 1974.

Author Eric Linklater was born in Penarth, Wales in 1899 but considered Scotland to be his home. He was educated at Aberdeen Grammar School and Aberdeen University and went on to command the Orkney garrison during World War Two. Linklater wrote more than twenty short stories and novels, including 'The Wind on the Moon', for which he won a Carnegie Medal.
