Richard the Lionheart was captured on his way home from Crusade by King Leopold V of Austria on 20 December 1192.

Richard the Lionheart was captured and imprisoned by Leopold V of Austria on 20 December 1192. The English king was held hostage until February 1194 and part of his ransom money was used to create the Austrian town Wiener Neusdadt.
