On 3 November 1698, ships from the Darien Expedition landed at New Caledonia after a journey of more than four months.
The Darien ships had left the port of Leith on 12 July 1698, in the hope of establishing an overseas trading colony. More than 2,000 lives were lost during the ill-fated expedition which also cost Scotland much of her wealth. Darien was finally abandoned on 12 April, 1700.
