On 14 October 1788, Robert Burns became one of the first passengers on the world's first paddle-propelled steamboat.

The world's first recorded steamboat experiment took place on 14 October 1788 at Dalswinton Loch near Ellisland. Robert Burns was invited to join the initial voyage by his landlord Patrick Miller, making him one of the first passengers ever to travel by steamboat.
