Actor Ian Bannen was born on 29 June 1928 in Airdrie. Bannen was a pupil at St Aloysius's College in Glasgow and made his stage debut in Dublin in 1947.

He is perhaps best known for his performance as Crow in the 1965 film The Flight of the Phoenix for which he received an Academy Award nomination - becoming the first Scottish actor to be nominated for the award. He was given a BAFTA Lifetime Achievement award in 1996.
