Dr George Cathcart, the man responsible for setting up and helping to fund the early Prom concerts, died on 4 January 1951. Dr Catchart was an Edinburgh doctor whose passion for sharing music led him to create the Prom concerts, which were conducted by his friend Sir Henry Wood, and funded by Cathcart in the early years.

The word 'prom' is short for 'promenade concert' and the BBC Proms comprises an eight-week season of summer concerts at the Royal Albert Hall in London.
