'Old Tom Morris', one of golf's first professional players, was born on 16 June 1821 in St Andrews. Morris became known was 'Old Tom' in the sport, to distinguish him from his son Tom, who was also a professional golfer.

Old Tom Morris had a lifelong love of golf - he grew up playing golf around the streets of St Andrews with his friends, using wine bottle corks as golf balls. By the age of fourteen, he was apprenticed to golf pioneer Allan Robertson, and learnt his craft through a four-year apprenticeship, followed by five years as a journeyman.

Morris won the Open Championship four times in six years, between 1861 and 1867.
