Scottish architect James Gibbs was born on 23 December 1682 in Fittysmire, Aberdeen.
Scottish architect James Gibbs was born on 23 December 1682 in Fittysmire, Aberdeen. After considering a career in the priesthood, Gibbs decided to become an architect and carried out most of his training in Rome. His most famous work is the London church St Martin in the Fields, which Gibbs won the right to design following a competition in which architects were invited to submit their designs.
He also worked on buildings at both Oxford and Cambridge universities, including the Radcliffe Camera at Oxford University (pictured here).
