William Wallace and Andrew Murray wrote the Lubeck Letter on 11 October 1297, in which they invited German traders to deal directly with Scottish merchants, following Scotland's victory at the Battle of Stirling Bridge. Following the battle, ports which had been previously under English control came under Scottish authority again.
The Lubeck Letter was thought to have been destroyed during World War Two, but was found in a Lubeck Museum and is now on permanent loan to the Museum of Scotland.
