Nigel Tranter, the Scottish historian and author of historical novels died on 9 January 2000.

Tranter had a keen interest in Scottish history and wrote more than 130 books during a career which spanned over sixty years.

He published his first book, on Scottish castles, at the age of 25 and followed this up with a series of historical novels such as The Queen's Grace, which focused on the lives of real-life historical characters.
