Hugh Montgomerie, 12th Earl of Eglinton, was born on 5 November 1739.

Hugh Montgomerie, 12th Earl of Eglinton, was born on 5 November 1739. Montgomorie was a politician (he acted as MP for Ayrshire from 1780 to 1796) and a composer. Among his works is the dance tune Ayrshire Lasses.

As Lord Lieutenant of Ayrshire, Montgomorie showed a keen interest in shipping and engineering and helped to fund the Glasgow, Paisley and Ardrossan Canal which was created to aid ships negotiating the silted River Clyde. The canal terminated at Port Eglinton, where nearby Eglinton Street was named after the earl.
