On this day in history - Author Robert Louis Stevenson was born

Author Robert Louis Stevenson was born in Edinburgh's New Town on 13 November 1850. Stevenson, whose work included Treasure Island and The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, was a member of the celebrated Stevenson lighthouse building dynasty which included his own father and grandfather.

Stevenson suffered from poor health throughout his life and during his adult years, travelled the globe widely in search of the perfect climate in which to live. He died in Samoa at the age of 44.
