Secretary of State Tom Johnston was born on 2 November, 1881 in Kirkintilloch. Johnston was the son of a grocer and was educated at Lenzie Academy and later at Glasgow University, where he first became interested in politics, producing the left wing magazine Forward.

He was elected as a MP for Stirling and Clackmannan Western in 1929 and during World War Two, was appointed Scotland’s Commissioner for Civil Defence. He was appointed Secretary of State for Scotland by Winston Churchill in 1941 and retained the post until the end of World War Two. One of his most successful schemes in Scotland was establishing hydro electricity in the north of the country.
