Scottish painter William Dyce was born on 19 September 1806. ...

Scottish painter William Dyce was born on 19 September 1806 in Aberdeen. Dyce studied art in Edinburgh and London before travelling to Rome, where he met German Nazarene painters who would influence his own work.

On his return to Scotland, Dyce earned a living through portrait painting, before becoming head of Edinburgh's School of Design, where he was able to pursue his love of religious and historic paintings (his painting 'Knights of the round table departing on the quest for the holy grail' is shown here).

Aberdeen Art Gallery holds a collection of the works of William Dyce.
