On 4 May 1799, East Lothian captain Sir David Baird led the storming of Seringapatum in India. The attack was carried out in revenge for Baird's four years of imprisonment after being captured at the Battle of Polilur.

Baird took the stronghold where he'd been held prisoner but felt disappointed at what he perceived as a lack of respect he was given by British authorities for the victory and refused the pension he was offered by the East India Company for his role in the victory.
