The Battle of Culloden was fought on 16 April 1746, and saw Jacobite forces defeated by a Hanoverian army. ...

On 16 April 1746, Jacobite forces were defeated by Hanoverian armies at the Battle of Culloden, which took place close to Inverness. The battle, in which around 2,000 Jacobites were killed, compared to the loss of around fifty Hanoverians, was the last forced attempt by the Stewarts to regain the throne of Scotland.

Government forces outnumbered the Jacobites by around two to one and in the aftermath of the battle, fleeing Jacobites were pursued and persecuted, with Bonnie Prince Charlie leaving for the continent.
