Victory in Europe day was celebrated on 8 May 1945 as the Allies formally accepted the unconditional surrender of the armed forces of Nazi Germany. The surrender came eight days after Hitler's suicide, and Victory in Europe day marked the end of hostilities in Europe.

However, it would be another three months before the end of World War Two, when Japan surrendered.
