On this day in Scottish history - Labour Party leader John Smith was born

Scottish politician John Smith, leader of the Labour Party, was born on 13 September 1938. Smith was born in Dalmally (his birthplace is pictured here) and was a pupil at Dunoon Grammar School, before enrolling at Glasgow University to study history. He joined in the Labour Party in 1956 and became MP for Lanarkshire North in 1970, before becoming Secretary for Trade.

Smith was leader of the Labour Party at the time of his death of a heart attack in 1994. He is buried on the isle of Iona.
