The Scottish town of Perth has been granted city status to mark celebrations for the Queen's Diamond Jubilee.

The town of Perth in Scotland has been granted city status, along with St Asaph in Wales and Chelmsford in Essex, has been granted city status as part of the Queen's Diamond Jubilee celebrations. The three towns beat off competition from 22 other towns, who all made applications for the privilege of being named as a city.

Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg said of the towns' bids: 'I have been moved by the pride and passion which people have shown in putting their nominations forward. The standard of application was very high and those who missed out should not be downhearted. I hope the competition has given the residents of all the places which applied a sense of civic pride, of collective ownership and community spirit.'

Perth is to mark the forthcoming jubilee celebrations with a number of community events, including an attempt to break a record for the highest number of people running in kilts.
