Playwright O H Mavor was born in Glasgow on 3 January 1888. ...
On 3 January 1888, playwright O H Mavor (James Bridie) was born in Glasgow. Mavor was educated at Glasgow University and worked as a doctor during both World Wars. Throughout his medical career, he maintained an interest in writing and is best known for the play The Anatomist, which is based on the life of Dr Robert Knox, who supplied bodies for dissection.
 
Mavor also worked alongside Alfred Hitchcock, on projects including:
  • The Paradine Case (1947)
  • Under Capricorn (1949)
  • Stage Fright (1950)

Mavor was one of the original founders of the Citizens Theatre in Glasgow, along with his cousin and fellow author Guy McCrone. His connections to Glasgow University are remembered through the Bridie Library at the university, and an annual Bridie Dinner.
