The University of Strathclyde offer a world-leading online Genealogical Studies Programme designed to help you with your Scottish family history journey.

The 8-week online classes are an ideal way to develop your expertise and skills and cover a range of topics including Family History Research, Genetic Genealogy and Using Technology in Your Family Tree. These credit bearing classes provide lessons using downloadable learning materials and are designed as an immersive learning experience where students can interact with each other.

For those with experience in genealogy, the online Postgraduate Certificate, Diploma or MSc in Genealogical Studies has been developed by academics and genealogy professionals to provide a thorough grounding in the theory and practice of genealogical research, with an emphasis on research within the British Isles and a particularly strong focus on Scottish records.

An important element of the MSc are the Lectures and Assignments on genetic genealogy, providing an enhanced learning experience in the fastest developing field of genealogical studies. There has been an increasing interest in genetic genealogy as the technology of DNA testing has developed and the potential for genealogical applications has become clear. This element of the course also provides learning and guidance on the interpretation of an autosomal test, and students can take a test to enhance their learning, although this is optional!

The Genealogy Department are also involved in a range of research activities focusing on documentary and genetic evidence. The wealth of knowledge and expertise of our staff in this area ensures continual refreshment of course content which also benefits from research such as the Battle of Bannockburn Family History Project and the Declaration of Arbroath Family History Project.

“The ability to claim an MSc from Strathclyde provides immediate respect and lends widely recognized credibility to my resume as a professional genealogist”.
