James Muir Mathieson, Scottish conductor and composer, was born in Stirling on 24 January 1911. He was educated at Stirling High School and the Royal College of Music in London and conducted the music for more than 1,000 films including the 1953 film Genevieve (pictured). He is perhaps best known for his work as musical director on Alfred Hitchcock's 1958 film Vertigo.
He said that his greatest wish was 'to see British genius exploited throughout the world and recognised by other countries.' Mathieson was married to ballerina Hermione Darnborough with whom he had four children. He died on 2 August 1975.
