On 16 May 1805, explorer Sir Alexander Burnes was born in Montrose. Burnes, who was the son of a provost, gained a taste for travel whilst serving in the army of the East India Company, which he joined at the age of sixteen.
He is the author of Travels into Bokhara which is one of the best-selling travel books of all time and which gained him the recognition of the Royal Geographical Society.
