The Institute of Historical Research (IHR) has released details of its free of charge resources to support historians during the Coronavirus restrictions.

The starting point is the IHR's guide to free access online research here with listings of accessible online material, aimed particularly at those writing dissertations and undertaking online research.

The guide is a work in progress and the IHR invite members of the public to submit their own resource suggestions via an online suggestion box

IHR digital library

All 1,300 volumes of British History Online are currently free to access, until 30 September. This is a collection of primary and secondary sources with particular strengths in British and Irish history, c.1200-1800. Access the volumes here.

Speaking on their website, IHR director Jo Fox said: 'Like others, we're very aware of the challenges now facing researchers unable to access to libraries and archives. This is significant for all historians, at every career stage. But it's particularly challenging for MA students (and their tutors) and all those working to fixed deadlines to complete research projects in the coming months.

'There's now much information circulating on social media and in professional communities about new materials coming online. This is extremely welcome. But it can also be difficult to keep abreast of the changing landscape, and to know where to look for information.

'In response, the IHR Library has created this new guide which seeks to consolidate information, bringing it together in one place. Below you'll find lists of links to freely accessible online content - organised, for example, by publication type, chronology and theme. At the start you'll also find helpful advice from the IHR Library team on how to make the most of this resource.'
