Malcolm IV was crowned king of Scots - In this day on history

Malcolm IV was crowned king of Scots at Scone on 27 May 1153, three days after the death of his grandfather David I, the previous king (the pair are shown together on this picture).

Malcolm IV did not actually have a 'coronation', since that required anointing with holy oil, which Scottish kings were not permitted to do until David II. Malcolm had a lesser-order inauguration ceremony instead.

Malcolm was aged twelve at his coronation and reigned until 1165, when he died unmarried at the age of 24. He was succeeded by his brother William, who was styled William the Lion.
