Statues of leading Scottish historic personalities are to be removed from Glasgow's George Square as part of a £15 million revamp of the area, ahead of the Commonwealth Games in 2014. City councillors have approved the project, which will see thirteen statues removed for restoration - including those of Robert Burns, James Watt, Lord Clyde and Sir John More - then returned to the square, or given a new home elsewhere in the city.

SNP councillor Graeme Hendry said: 'It is good to see George Square is going to get the redevelopment it has needed for so long. We need to be realistic with people what can be done. It will cost a lot of money to remove the statues. It will also cost significant money to change the traffic flow around it, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t the right thing to do. I want to square to hold the dual purpose of holding big events but more of a green space nature to it.'
