Mary Queen of Scots was defeated in her attempts to regain the throne on 13 May 1568 at the Battle of Langside. Mary's supporters fought the forces of the Earl of Moray and were forced to flee the battlefield after less than an hour of fighting.
Mary and her escort rode from Langside to Dundrennan Abbey, sixty miles away, after which she departed for England.
