The Battle of Rullion Green took place - On this day in Scottish history

The Battle of Rullion Green, the culmination of the Pentland Rising, took place on 28 November 1666. The battle saw Covenanter forces defeated by the king's troops after they had attempted to march on Edinburgh in protest on government attempts to restore episcopacy to Scotland.

Convenanter forces of around 900 men faced the army of Tam Dalyell of the House of Binns (pictured), who led over 3,000 men of the Scottish Royal Army. Around fifty of the Covenanters were killed and hundreds of others deserted the march to Edinburgh, leaving a few hundred men to attend a parade in the capital which was attacked by General Dalyell's forces. Fifteen of the rebels were executed.

A monument to those killed at the Battle of Rullion Green stands at Dreghorn Barracks at Collinton, Edinburgh.
